FAQs
Can I burn my logs immediately?
We are certified under the ‘Woodsure Ready to Burn’ scheme. Our seasoned logs are ready to burn, having been fully seasoned to a moisture content of 20% or below.
Is the wood from the logs sourced sustainably?
The majority of our wood comes from sustainable felling practices on Winton estate, as part of our Continuous Cover Forestry approach {link to forestry page}. Any wood sourced outwith Winton Estate must also meet the sustainable standards as set out by the Woodsure standards.
What size do the logs come in?
Timber is a natural product, and as such the wood we process comes to us in all shapes and sizes. We cut logs to approximately 8” lengths, however the splitting process creates an array of different log widths, with some being chunkier or slimmer than others.
We aim to keep the maximum diameter of the logs to 6”. Different loads may have a greater number of slimmer or chunkier logs in than others.
There are shavings and bark in my delivery – is this normal?
During the cutting and splitting process, we aim to filter out as many of the smaller pieces (termed ‘shards’) as possible, however inevitably some get through. During the drying process bark can also split away from the logs and end up loose in the box.
This does not affect the volume of your order which is always checked at 1.5 cubic metres per box.
What species of wood is my order comprised of?
Your order will be comprised solely of sustainably sourced hardwoods. No two loads will be the same, but generally the hardwoods we use are a mix of ash, sycamore, beech, birch and oak. Given the variety and rotation of our cutting processes we are unable to offer any loads with only one type of wood. We do not currently offer any softwood, however custom orders can be made provided enough notice is given. Please contact the Winton Logs office for details (see contact information below).
Why do you sell by volume and not weight?
It is considered best practice to sell firewood logs by volume rather than weight, as the exact quantity can be difficult to define, given that logs with a greater moisture content are heavier. All of our wood is seasoned to moisture content 20% or below, and sold by the cubic metre so you know exactly what you are buying.
What quantity of logs will I need?
This is a tricky question to give a precise answer too, as it will depend on whether you use logs as your main heat source, or if it is a particularly cold winter for example. We find in general that 3 cubic metres is usually sufficient to last our customers a winter season.
Do you deliver kindling and firelighters?
We do deliver kindling and firelighters, however these can only be delivered as part of a logs delivery. If you require only kindling and/or firelighters then collection from Winton Logs is possible. To arrange a collection please call 01875 342 045.
Do you offer a stacking service?
We regret that we are currently unable to offer a stacking service with our deliveries. This is due to an extremely busy delivery schedule.
Can I collect logs from you directly?
We do offer a collection service, however if you are within a 2 mile radius of Winton Logs delivery is included in the price. To arrange a collection please call 01875 342 045.
It’s my delivery day and it’s raining heavily – can I reschedule?
As long as conditions are safe for our drivers, we can deliver in all weather conditions. Given the low moisture content of the wood, the logs would need to absorb a lot of water to get to a moisture content that isn’t burnable. This wouldn’t happen over the course of one delivery day.
That being said, if you have ordered loose logs, when these are tipped at your specified location, we recommend using a tarpaulin to cover the logs to keep them dry before stacking.
